Wall field adventures

Wall field adventures:
small seasonal experiences in the living landscape of Hadrian’s Wall

Eden Rooted began with a simple question: how do we bring what many nature-centred communities call our 'oldest knowledge' - the knowledge of how to be in mutual relationship with the natural world we co-evolved with - back into everyday life?

Come and find out on a Wall Field Adventure! These are small, seasonal, outdoor experiences in the living landscape around Hadrian’s Wall, Northumberland. They blend gentle nature-relationship practices, seasonal plant knowledge, local stories, folklore, and time to simply notice what is here.

They are not lectures or standard guided walks; they're invitations to slow down, pay attention, and begin a real relationship with this extraordinary place, showing you how you can do the same wherever you are.

Who these are for

Wall Field Adventures are for people who:

  • Feel drawn to Hadrian’s Wall but want more than a standard heritage or weekend walk.

  • Would like to meet the plants, stories, weather, and more-than-human life of this landscape, not just its stones.

  • Want a gentle, thoughtful outdoor experience.

  • Are curious about nature connection, folklore, seasonal change, and practical plant knowledge.

  • Would value a small group, unhurried pace, and time to notice what calls to them.

You do not need to be an expert in plants, ecology, history, or foraging. You only need curiosity, suitable outdoor clothing, and a willingness to pay attention.

How the adventures work

Each Wall Field Adventure is a small-group, seasonal experience lasting around three hours.

While each event is different, most follow a similar shape:

  • Arrival and threshold - a warm welcome, tea if the venue allows, and settling in.

  • A field question - a simple invitation to guide your attention.

  • Time outdoors - a slow walk or series of short stops along a section of Hadrian’s Wall Path or nearby landscape, with pauses for exploring, quests, and ecological or historical encounters.

  • Knowledge gifts  short, researched threads woven into the walk: a plant’s life, a piece of local history or folklore, a seasonal insight, or a practical skill.

  • Reflection and sharing - space to notice what has surfaced, what you have seen or felt, and what you might carry home.

  • A practice to take home - a small, doable invitation to continue the relationship with your own local place.

Nature does most of the teaching. My role is to hold the container, offer structure, and share knowledge in a way that deepens your encounter rather than replacing it.

Where they take place

Adventures are based around Wall village and the central section of Hadrian’s Wall, using accessible sections of the Hadrian’s Wall Path and nearby landscape.

Starting points include:

  • Wall village and Wall Crags

  • Magna (Carvoran) Roman Fort and museum

  • Steel Rigg / Sycamore Gap area

  • Housesteads Roman Fort

  • Heavenfields

Exact routes are chosen according to season, weather, ground conditions, group needs, and access. Some sections involve uneven ground, slopes, and exposure to weather; I will always choose routes that are as accessible as possible for the group.

If you have mobility, sensory, or access needs, please contact me before booking so we can discuss how best to support you.

Private and custom Wall Field Adventures

If you are part of an organisation, retreat group, or circle of friends, I can design a custom Wall Field Adventure for your group.

These can be tailored to:

  • Your group’s interests (plants, folklore, history, nature connection, seasonal themes).

  • Your energy levels and access needs.

  • Your preferred location along the Wall corridor.

  • Your timing and schedule.

Please get in touch to discuss possibilities and pricing.

Is this right for me?

A Wall Field Adventure is likely to suit you if you:

  • Want a slow, meaningful outdoor experience rather than a fast-paced hike or standard guided tour.

  • Are happy to spend most of the time outdoors in all weathers (with appropriate clothing).

  • Value thoughtful facilitation, practical knowledge, and reflective space.

  • Are comfortable with a supportive but non-therapeutic group environment.

It may not be the best fit if you:

  • Are looking for a strenuous fitness walk or a purely historical lecture.

  • Prefer purely indoor, classroom-style learning.

  • Need a highly structured, goal-driven coaching programme.

  • Are unable to manage uneven ground and exposure to weather, even with adaptations.

If you are unsure, I am happy to have a brief conversation to see whether this matches what you are looking for.

A note on safety and respect for place

Hadrian’s Wall is a fragile, internationally important archaeological landscape as well as a living habitat.

On all Wall Field Adventures we:

  • Stay on established paths and respect any access restrictions or conservation guidance.

  • Do not climb on or disturb the Wall or other archaeological features.

  • Follow Leave No Trace principles and the Countryside Code.

  • Forage only where it is safe, legal, and ecologically appropriate, and never in protected or sensitive areas.

The intention is to meet this place with care, curiosity, and reciprocity - not to extract from it.
